CHIANG RAI – Air quality in the northern region has improved except for a border area in Chiang Rai province where the pollution has posed a negative health effect.

The Pollution Control Department’s (PCD) Director General Wijarn Simachaya said the air pollution level in the northern region is at moderate level to health, with the airborne particulate matter recorded at 200 microgram per cubic meter in the border area of Wiang Phang Kham county, Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai province.

The overall particulate matter value in the northern region has receded slightly, keeping the air quality within standard level, thanks to rains in the area.

The Chiang Rai area has been influenced by haze blown across the border from the neighboring country.

The PCD has advised the provincial authorities to be on alert for potential fire hazards as hotspots have been discovered in many provinces, give suggestions to the general public on healthy practices and see to it that any burning of forests and agricultural waste will be prohibited.
