CHIANG RAI – Col Chalongchai Chaiyakham, Commander of the Pha Muang task force, said Saturday that Army Rangers seized approximately 10 kilograms of heroin worth about 10 million baht, left behind by a group of men who fled during a search in Mae Fa Luang district of Chiang Rai.

Army Rangers from the Pha Muang task force spotted seven men travelling on five motorcycles with three fertilizer sacks while they were patrolling Hauy Maekham village in tambon Salong Nai at around 7.30pm on Friday.

When the rangers asked to conduct a search, the men immediately ran into a nearby forest, leaving the motorcycles and the fertilizer sacks behind.

The army rangers opened the abandoned sacks to find 20 packages of heroin, weighing approximately 10kg, with a street value of almost 10 Million Baht, (2.8 Million USD)

Col Chalongchai Chaiyakham, said that the seized drugs were believed to belong to the Wa drug network led by Col Jalorbor, whose base was in southern Myanmar.

To avoid arrest, traffickers keep hiring new groups of teenagers to smuggle illicit drugs into northern border areas, which were used as storage points before they are smuggled into the inner areas, said Col Chalongchai during a news conference.
