Mae Sai Border Patrol Officers Find 120Kg of Crystal Meth Hidden in Secret Compartment of Toyota Mini Van
CHIANG RAI – Pol Lt Col Paduangkiat Panthornthanaka, commander of the border patrol police unit in Mae Sai told a press meeting that police recovered 120 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine hidden in secret compartments under the floor of an abandoned van after it sped through a checkpoint on a local road in Mae Sai district.
Pol Lt Col Paduangkiat said border patrol police and drug suppression officers manning a road checkpoint at Sanpuloei village in Mae Sai spotted a Toyota van with Bangkok license plates approaching them about 12.20am on Friday morning.
Officers signaled the driver to stop for a search, but instead he sped through the checkpoint forcing officers to give chase. They found the Toyota van abandoned approximately half a mile down the road. The driver had fled into the cover of darkness but was later tracked down and arrested.
A search of the van found three secret compartments in the floor, inside were 120 packages labeled as tea from China containing approximately a kilogram of crystal methamphetamine.
The driver, whose name was not released, was taken to for questioning and legal action.
Pol Lt Col Paduangkiat told reporters that he had ordered the checkpoint set up on a local road because drug smugglers had recently been using them to avoid police stops on main roadways.
