Japan’s Consulate General Presents New Earthquake-Resistant School in Chiang Rai
The Japanese government has supported the construction of school buildings earthquake resistant school for Dong Mada Mae Lao District, Chiang Rai Province

CHIANG RAI – Mr. Shinya Aoki, The Consul-General of Japan in Chiang Mai ceremoniously handed over the keys to an earthquake-resistant school building in Mae Lao district, Chiang Rai.
Chiang Rai Governor Prachon Pradsakul accepted the building from the Japanese Consulate General in Mae Lao district. The School is which is able to withstand earthquakes up to 7.0 on the Richter Scale was funded by Japan.

On May 5, 2014, the largest recorded earthquake in the history of Thailand with a magnitude 6.3,hit Chiang Rai Province, centered on the border between Maelao and Pan Districts.
Many schools in Chiang Rai Province, including Ban Dongmada School, suffered severe damage that rendered the buildings unusable. As a result, many students did not have a place to study.
The Consulate General of Japan conducted a survey of the damaged areas and consulted with the Office of Vocational Education Primary Region 2 to support the construction of a new earthquake-resistant school building to replace Ban Dong Mada School, one of the most damaged of all the school buildings.
Ban Dongmada School is a public primary school serving 3 villages in Dongmada Sub-District and now has 145 students enrolled from kindergarten through 6th grade. Many of the students are orphans, children from poor families and stateless children. Ethnic minorities such as Aka and Hmong account for over half of all students.
In other events in Chiang Rai, Labor Minister Sirichai Ditthakul and Labor Ministry Permanent Secretary Puntharik Smiti opened a skill training project for workers in Chiang Rai province to help accommodate the ASEAN Economic Community.
Besides, the project aims to develop the potentials of employees, employers, volunteer workers and government officials in four northern provinces including Chiang Rai, Payao, Prae and Nan. Chiang Rai is a major economic base which links Thailand with Myanmar, Laos and southern China. It has a great potential to become a base for trade, investment, industry and tourism.
The training course, which focuses on improving the readiness of workers in both quantity and quality especially with respect to their developed skills, was attended by about 100 people.
