Government Helps Stateless Student in Chiang Rai Compete at Hong Kong International Robotics Olympiad
CHIANG RAI – A stateless Mathayom 3 student has been granted permission participate in the Hong Kong International Robotics Olympiad 2018 during July 20-23 as one of Thailand’s representatives.
Aryo Megag, a stateless hill-tribe student from the Ban Huay Namyen school in Tambon Wawi, Mae Sruey district of Chiang Rai earned the right to represent Thailand at the Hong Kong International Robotics Olympiad 2018, after team won a gold medal in the national basic robotics competition for high school students.
Aryo is one of the school’s robotics team members, but he could not leave Thailand because he is a stateless boy, as his parents are highlanders who do not have Thai citizenship. Hence, Aryo was not registered as a Thai Citizen when he was born leaving him with stateless status.
However, the school contacted the District Chief to help him fulfill his dream and his case was forwarded to the Ministry of the Interior which has approved in principle the boy’s travel request as a special case.
Aryo said he was very delighted to be able to join the contest and vowed to do his best to try to win a trophy for Thailand.
The Hong Kong International Robotics Olympiad 2018 will be held from July 20th to 23rd in Hong Kong.
