CHIANG RAI – Drug runners fled following a brief firefight with border security officials leaving behind 530,000 methamphetamine tablets at a checkpoint in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district on Saturday night.

Mae Sae district chief Somsak Khanannam said the drug runners travelling in a pickup truck refused to stop at a manned security checkpoint and instead opened firing at officials manning it.

He said security officials including soldiers and administrative officials from the district, then returned fire on the fleeing drug runners.

The gunfight lasted for about five minutes, some sacks were then thrown out of the vehicle, which sped away.

When officials checked the sacks, they found a huge quantity of meth-amphetamine tablets.
