CHIANG RAI – Chiang Rai’s  Damrongrat Songkhroh school students were warmly welcomed home by teachers, schoolchildren and parents at Mae Fa Luang airport after winning two awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona, the United States.

The Damrongrat Songkhroh school students  won awards for rice seedlings coated with indigenous resin to prolong their life affected by drought. The resin which has won the special award from the United Sstates Agency for International Development, plus 3,000-dollar scholarships, was developed by Nampeung Panya, Pirachat Khachanil and Chetsada Sitthikhankaew at Mathayom 6 level.

Nampeung, a student at Damrongrat songkroh School, nearly missed out on competing in the fair, as her application for a US visa had been turned down twice due to her statelessness.

Nampueng had been earlier denied visa to the U.S. twice due to her being notified as persons without nationality. Given the Thai nationality by the Department of Provincial Administration, the girl student was allowed to contest.
