CHIANG RAI –    The Constitution Drafting Commissions (CDC) subcommittee on input gathering along with the King Prajadhipok’s Institute will visit Chiang Rai Province on November 22, 2015

The Constitution Drafting Commission will present the guidelines for submitting suggestions online before opening the floor to the public to offer suggestions on such matters as the rights, freedoms and duties of Thai citizens; power decentralization; and national reform.

The meeting will mark the first time an online forum will be held where online users will be able to offer feedback along with attendants at the seminar.

The CDC affirms it will hold input gathering sessions in all regions of the country.

Thailand’s military government, which took power in May last year, appointed a committee to draft the country’s 20th constitution after a previous draft was rejected, delaying promised elections until at least 2017.

Mr. Meechai Ruchupan, an adviser to the junta, was appointed to head the new committee.

Mr. Meechai Ruchupan has reiterated that the new charter is guided by five objectives, which chiefly aim to benefit the country and to provide opportunities for public participation.

The guidelines are that the constitution must be internationally recognized, solve the country’s problems, prevent corruption in politics, provide mechanisms for effective reform, and provide opportunities for public participation.

Mr Meechai said that the CDC needed to invite more participation from all parties in the charter drafting process. People’s opinions and suggestions compiled through these forums will be incorporated in the draft charter, in order to establish a constitution that will be enforced effectively for the good of the country.
