The cabinet yesterday approved a radical restructuring of provincial governors and Interior Ministry officials, a move seen as an attempt to boot from the ministry of people linked to the de facto leader Bhumjaithai Party Newin Chidchob.
Thirty-four transfers proposed by the ministry gave the green light, the second government spokesman.
Among those transferred was governor of Chiang Rai, Somchai Hatthayatanti, the Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung had promised during the general elections to remove. Mr. Somchai was transferred to an inactive position, as an inspector, an informed source said.
During the election campaign, Mr. Somchai was accused of not paying enough attention to Mr. Chalerm as he traveled north to conduct campaign activities in the province, the source said.
Thanee Samartkij Buri Ram governor, another government official seen as having close ties with Mr Newin, was also transferred to a post down.
No replacement was named by Mr. Thanee. The fact that there is no substitute for some of the governors has added weight to speculation that the transfers soon be in sight of the Ministry of Interior, the same source.
Surin governor Serm Chainarong was appointed Governor of Lamphun.
Khwanchai Wongnitikorn, director general of the Department of Local Government and also is said to be a protege of Mr Newin, was taken to the post of Permanent Secretary for the interior, a high-ranking position.
Ekkachai Khoms Udon Thani governor is said that had the backing of Justice Minister Pracha Promnok was appointed governor of Chon Buri.
