CHIANG RAI – Pol Col Prathak Charoensil, deputy Chiang Rai police chief, has reported that more than two million speed pills and 10kg of crystal methamphetamine were found in 20 fertilizer sacks concealed in the bushes in Chiang Rai’s Mae Lao district on Thursday.
Police called to the scene found 20 fertilizer sacks that had been modified as backpacks left in the roadside bushes.
Pol Col Prathak Charoensil said sacks each contained about 100,000 methamphetamine pills. Ten packages each containing crystal methamphetamine, or ya ice, were also found in those sacks.
Local resident Uthai Boonthep said he and his friend spotted an unusual pile of grass in the area while on the way to go fishing on Mae Mon River, so they checked it out.
When they removed the grass, they found a tarpaulin-covered mound. Underneath it they found the bags full of drugs.
Police believed the drugs might have been stashed by drug traffickers made wary by seeing several police checkpoints in the area.
