CHIANG RAI – At a signing ceremony for the Heral City Project took place at Mae Fah Luang University, Governor Boonsong Techamaneesatit and related officials signed an agreement to make the northernmost province of Chiang Rai a city of herbs.

The project is aimed at promoting the herb-processing industry in Chiang Rai in keeping with the government’s policy to upgrade Thai herbs in preparation for the Thailand 4.0 industrial era.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has assigned the Ministry of Public Health to oversee the government’s research and development of Thai herbs. Chiang Rai is one of the four provinces selected for the pilot herb development project.

Various agencies jointly held a folk medicine fair to showcase indigenous curative herbs, folk medicine production and health care practices by traditional doctors from eight upper northern provinces. The event also featured a seminar inviting experts in folk medicine to share their knowledge and experiences with participants.

The signatories including Chiang Rai Governor Boonsong Techamaneesatit were Director General of the Department of Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine Dr. Suriya Wongkongkathep, and President of Mae Fah Luang University Assoc. Prof. Wanchai Sirichana, Chiang Rai Provincial Public Health Chief Dr. Surin Sumanapan and committee members of the Herbal City Project.
