CHIANG RAI – Pol Gen Chalermkiat Srivorakhan told a press briefing on Sunday that police intercepted a pick-up truck which ran a Tha Ko checkpoint in Mae Suai district on Feb 7. The driver fled, leaving 4.4 million meth pills in the truck .

Pol Gen Chalermkiat, a deputy police chief in charge of drug suppression, said police in Wiang Pa Pao district managed to arrest the driver, Vorachart Laohang, 26, on Phrao-Wieng Pa Pao road at 10am on Sunday while he was waiting for a bus to Chiang Mai.

The pickup drew the attention of officers at a checkpoint in Mae Lao district because of the canvas covering the cargo bed. They’d been tipped off that a large drug shipment might be coming in from Myanmar.

Meanwhile, police arrested Suthee Manoruang, 33, after stopping a pick-up truck he was driving at Pa Tueng checkpoint in Mae Lao district at 7.30am on Sunday and discovering 2 million meth pills in inside.

In both cases, the two confessed they were hired to deliver the drugs. The meth pills had either a “999” or “y1” mark on them, indicating they were produced by tribesmen of Wa ethnic origin in Myanmar opposite Mae Sai and Mae Fa Luang districts of Chiang Rai.

Police will expand the investigation to find the operators of the drug network, Pol Gen Chalermkiat said.
