CHIANG RAI – The Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, along with Chiang Rai governor Boonsong Techamaneesatit, government agencies’ heads, Buddhists from Thailand and Laos, tourists and over 1000 cyclists; participated in an alms giving ceremony at Pha Than Beach on the bank of Mekong River, at Chiang Khong district, Chiang Rai.

Participants offered food and sticky rice to 60 monks, a common Laos’ tradition that is practiced by communities along the Mekong River. Some tourists were dressed in traditional Lanna attire and the Laos national dress.

After Buddhist processions had been completed, cyclists rode through the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge between Chiang Khong – Huay Sai to Bokeo in order to distribute blankets and other items of need to people of Laos.

Meanwhile, On 3 May 2014, at Golden Triangle, Amphoe Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai Province, Dr. Suwat Sidthilaw, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Thanpuying Wilawan Weeranuwat, Chairperson of the Remote Sensing Television in Honour of His Majesty the King Foundation, and Mr.Chatchai Sa-nguanpong, Deputy Governor of Chiang Rai Povince, opened Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup Golden Triangle International Triathlon for Greater Maekong Sub-region together.

This is the first triathlon that covers the routes in 3 countries, which are Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar in order to commemorate Coronation Day and to support health and recreation activities as well as create harmony among countries in Greater Meakong Sub-region.

There were more than 300 athletes joined the competition, including former singer and national athlete, Dr. Navin Yavapolkul, and many foreign athletes.
