Chiang Rai Navy Patrol Arrests Truck Thief after Sinking StolenTruck into Mekong River
CHIANG RAI – Navy Lt Cdr Chaturong Khachornfung has reported that a suspected car thief was caught shortly after a stolen pickup truck he and an accomplice were trying to load onto a boat sank in the Mekong River on Saturday morning around 5:30 AM.
Lt Cdr Chaturong Khachornfung said, his patrol unit spotted a suspicious Toyota pickup heading toward the river in Huay Meng village in tambon Chiang Khong of Chiang Khong district early in the morning.
The patrol unit followed and saw the driver trying to load the pickup onto a boat driven by another man.
When the officers arrived at the scene, the boat took off, causing the pickup to fall into the river and sink and truck driver to flee into a nearby forest, he was arrested shortly afterward.
Janpeng Tharavet, 43, of Khlong Luang district in Pathum Thani, was detained for further legal action.
Officers then set out to retrieve the sunken pickup, which they later confirmed had been stolen.
