CHIANG RAI – An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale jolted Chiang Rai province yesterday afternoon, prompting local officials to be on alert for more seismic activities in the region.

According to an announcement by the Seismological Bureau of the Thai Meteorological Department, the epicenter of the quake was located 9 kilometers deep in Mae Lao district. It was said to be one of over a thousand aftershocks of the 6.3-magnitude tremor that hit Phan district on May 5; however, it was the strongest one yet.

The force could be felt across three districts, namely Mae Lao, Phan and Mueang districts. However, no damages have been reported from the latest aftershock.

Chiang Rai Governor Pongsak Wangsamer has assigned local administrative officials as well as district and village chiefs in the affected areas to closely monitor the situation and be ready to assist residents in case another powerful quake strikes. The Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office and relevant units are now on 24-hour standby.
