PHAN -  National Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat of Wat Rong Khun has vowed to finish the construction of a Buddha image that was meant to be a gift to His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Chalermchai Kositpipat said after making a few more modifications, he was going to offer the Buddha image to the King and ask His Majesty to name it.

However, following the passing of His Majesty, Chalermchai has set out to complete the construction of the Buddha image and install it at Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai province for visitors to worship.

He said the art piece is inspired by his previous work depicting the Story of Mahajanaka, which was written by the late King. The national artist said many prototypes of the Buddha image had been created, but none captured his vision, which is to create a unique piece that does not borrow any artistic traits from previous eras.

According to the national artist, the dimensions of the completely-white Buddha image is 22 inches wide by 42 inches tall, with a 28-inch base. He said the features of the Buddha image will be accentuated by elegant traits of the contemporary art found during the reign of the late King.
