Air Quality Posing Health Risks in Northern Thailand

CHIANG RAI – The airborne particulate matter levels in the Northern Provinces provinces have been recorded at levels exceeding normal rates and are posing health risks, while officials have been dispatched to closely monitor the situation.

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) Director-General Wijarn Simachaya has said regarding the current haze situation in northern provinces of Thailand, that many provinces are experiencing the change in particulate matter (PM10) levels.

Twelve hot spots have been detected in the northern region, with seven hot spots alone in Chiang Rai province.

The provinces of Lampang and Lampoon are recording PM10 values at a value that has posed a risk on the public’s health, at 149 micrograms per cubic meter for Lampang, and 152 micrograms per cubic meter for Lampoon.

All of the affected northern provinces have been urged to monitor the situation closely, and to communicate with the public to refrain from burning activities, while the PCD has set up a war room to monitor and addressing the issue, according to the PCD’s Director General.

He disclosed that a video teleconference will be made between officials from the nine northern provinces, the third army region, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, in an integrated effort to solve the issue by utilizing equipment various agencies.
