The Seismological Bureau under the Meteorological Department reported that the quake originated about 14 kilometers northwest of Chiang Rai province and was 13 kilometers deep.

Residents living in Mae Sai, Chiang Saen, Mae Chan, and Mae Fah Luang districts as well as those in the downtown area of Chiang Rai have slightly experienced the aftershocks.
