3 Killed in Clash Between Drug Couriers and Police in ChiangRai

CHIANGRAI – Three Hill tribesmen were killed and 1.2 million methamphetamine pills seized in a clash between a band of drug couriers and a combined military-police drug suppression unit of the Pha Muang Force in Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province early on Wednesday.

Pol Maj-Gen Wanchai Suwansirikhet, the Chiang Rai police chief, said the clash occurred shortly after midnight on the ridge of Doi Pha Chang Moop along the border with Myanmar near Muser Pha Hi village in tambon Pong Pha of Mae Sai district.

The drug couriers, who sneaked across the border from Ban Bala in Myanmar, retreated after the clash, leaving behind three bodies, three rifles, and 12 green backpacks.

The backpacks were contained about 1.2 million speed pills, with an estimated value of 360 million baht.

The Pha Muang Force soldiers said the killed couriers were Muser tribesmen of a drug trafficking unit run by Lt-Col Yi Se, who is wanted under a warrant in Thailand with a reward of two million baht for information leading to his arrest.

Lt-Col Yi Se’s force had collects fees from all groups of drug producers and traders operating along the Thai-Myanmar border between Mae Sai and Mae Fa Luang districts
