BANGKOK – Public Health Minister Dr. Ratchata Ratchatanawin revealed at a press conference that 190 people have been killed in road accidents from December 30th – January 1st.
On New Year’s Day alone 60 people were killed in 604 road accidents while 625 others were injured.The road safety campaign, which began on December 30th, resulted in more than 1,700 people injured during this period.The number one cause of accidents was alcohol, accounting for 49% of all the reasons while motorcycles topped the list of vehicles experiencing the accidents, involved in 85% of the incidents.

Of all the provinces, Chiang Mai possessed the highest number of road accidents with 71 times during the 3-day period with Nakhon Sawan having the highest number of injuries of 75.

However, the highest death tolls were in Phetchabun and Buriram, each of which is reported to have 9 deaths. The Public Health Minister said most of the accidents occurred between 00.001- 04.00 hrs which indicated that they took place after a celebrations.
