17-Year-Old Boy Found Dead at Sea in Southern Thailand

On Sunday, the body of a 17-year-old boy was found and brought to shore in southern Thailand after being swept away by strong waves on Saturday.

The boy and two friends went swimming amid 2-3 metres-high waves off Nai Pret beach in Southern Thailand’s Nakhon Si Thammarat Province Saturday.

17-year-old Thanawat Suwan was swept away by the strong waves and a riptide. His two friends managed to swim back to the shore.

A search for the missing teen was undertaken by rescuers on jet skis, but they were unable to find him. The search was called off early in the evening of Saturday.

On Sunday morning, rescuers resumed the search for the missing teenager. His body was found floating between 500 and 600 metres from the shore at about 10 am. His body was sent to Khanom Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, a 60-year-old fisherman drowned after his fishing boat capsized near Saphan Hin Beach in southern Thailand’s resort island of Phuket, according to rescuers and the Royal Thai Navy.

After many hours in the water, the captain and another fisherman were able to swim to safety and reach shore around midnight. Another fisherman didn’t make it, and his body was found the following day.

According to reports, the surviving fisherman told authorities he thought his companion would survive and didn’t contact authorities until learning that he had disappeared. It is believed that the death was due to an accident, but the investigation is ongoing.
