1.6 Tonnes of High-Grade Marijuana Seized in Southern Thailand

Police found 1.6 tonnes of compressed high-grade marijuana hidden among the cargo of an 18-wheeled freight truck in a seaside village in Southern Thailand on Wednesday.

Drug enforcement authorities estimated the value of high-grade marijuana to be around 50 million baht. They also said the marijuana was en route to Malaysia.

Around 10:30 pm, Narathiwat police officers and Marine Police went to Ban Kubu in Tambon Praiwan to investigate reports that drugs were being smuggled to Malaysia by boat from there.

At the seaside village, the team noticed an 18-wheel trailer truck with license plates from Saraburi. Bolts of eucalyptus lumber filled the trailer.

Onboard the vehicle was Suphat Khathawarat, 37, of Narathiwat’s Sukhirin district, and Chorpaka Apaisawat, 24, of Surat Thani’s Phunphin district.

The officers noticed two areas in which the cargo where the eucalyptus lumber was positioned suspiciously.

As they removed some of the wood, they discovered 20 fertiliser sacks that contained 1,051 kilograms of compressed marijuana. An additional 14 fertiliser sacks containing 629 kilograms of marijuana were found at the second location.

A total of 1,680 kilogrammes of compressed marijuana were seized. According to police, the amount of money it was worth had it been smuggled into Malaysia was at least 50 million baht.

According to Mr Suphat, he told investigators that he had driven the truck with its cargo of logs south from Nakhon Phanom in the Northeast while hiding marijuana among the cargo. It was his first time making the trip.

The plan was to have someone else meet him at Ban Kubu after he arrived in Tak Bai and take the marijuana to Malaysia by boat.

Drug charges were filed against the couple.

Police said they would extend the investigation in order to confirm whether or not the driver was involved in the smuggling operation, as well as who was operating it.
