Some Users' Google Home Routines Disappear After a New Home Control UI

(CTN News) – With Google Home ramping up preview testing for its big re-design, Google is tweaking the user interface a bit more and breaking some of the existing Assistant routines for some users as well.

In the past few days, Google Home has been rolling out a revamped interface for adding smart home devices to routines in the Google Home app.

This interface has been available for a while. As opposed to the previous App that allowed users to adjust on or off settings from a single page with drop-down settings for each light or switch within their home, the Android App allows users to establish routines for controlling other aspects of the device as well.

There is now a deeper menu that allows you to change color, brightness, and other settings depending on the device you are controlling. This is in contrast to the old interface where you could only control what was on or off.

There is no doubt that it is a significant improvement toward Google’s goal of providing more powerful automation, but it may come at a price.

The process of adding smart home devices to a routine now takes significantly longer than it did in the past. If you would like the Assistant to shut off all of your lights, for example, you will need to add a step to your routine for each of the individual devices in order to accomplish this.

Alternatively, if you would like to turn off all the lights in your home, you could create a custom Assistant command that says “turn off all the lights.”

We introduced this revamped UI as part of both the Google Home Public Preview redesign and the standard Google Home app redesign.

However, beyond that, a few users have also reported that the Google Home app has broken existing routines for them, as well. The other night I noticed that the settings of my “Bedtime” routine had been reset to their default settings, which wiped out the several steps that I’d had in place previously. Although I was able to easily recreate my previous setup, there was no indication that there had been a problem with it prior to the time I attempted to use the routine last night.

As it turns out, I’m not the only one experiencing this

Some of the users across Google Home support forums and Twitter have reported that over the past few days, all of their “personal” routines have disappeared from their computers.

“Household” routines appear to remain in place, as I have experienced in my case, but this ends up removing a lot of customized routines from an account as a result of removing a lot of these routines from the account altogether.

Some users are also reporting problems with the routine editor not loading properly, and we are not sure exactly how widespread this problem is.

At the time of publication, I am also seeing the same error when trying to edit a personal routine on my account. However, I did not experience it last night when I tried to edit a routine.

There is still no word on whether these issues will be resolved in the near future or if they are just temporary hiccups. This is because Google transitions to the upgraded version of the Home app in the coming weeks.

Anyhow, if you’re experiencing any issues, we’d love to hear about them – drop a comment below if you do!
