ChatGPT Task Force Formed By European Privacy Watchdog

(CTN News) – An organization that unites European privacy watchdogs announced Thursday it would create a ChatGPT task force, a crucial first step toward creating a common artificial intelligence privacy policy.

This move by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) follows a unilateral move by Italy last month to curb ChatGPT – a move that Germany’s data protection commissioner suggested might be followed in Europe’s largest economy. A preliminary investigation into potential data breaches by ChatGPT will also be launched by Spain’s AEPD watchdog on Thursday.

In spite of the fact that ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence program that attracted the public’s attention for its ability to answer a wide array of questions in a very short period of time, has become the fastest-growing consumer application in history, with over 100 million monthly active users.

However, this has led to concerns about the threat it might pose to jobs, safety, and privacy.

There have also been concerns expressed by experts, US government officials, as well as several other European governments about the rapid growth in the use of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence products.

According to the statement, the EDPB members discussed the recent enforcement action that has been undertaken by the Italian data protection authority against OpenAI regarding the Chat GPT service.

In order to foster cooperation among the data protection authorities and to exchange information about possible enforcement actions that may be lodged by the data protection authorities, the EDPB decided to create a dedicated task force.”

It is believed that member states hope to align their policy positions over time, but this will take time, according to a source of one national watchdog who asked not to be identified as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

According to the source, the member states are not trying to punish or impose rules that would affect ChatGPT’s owner OpenAI who is backed by Microsoft Corp, but rather are trying to come up with general policies that are transparent to all parties.

A more significant number of policy experts attended Thursday’s meeting than decision makers, according to the meeting organizers, but instead of taking any decisions, they presented opinions and exchanged ideas rather than taking any actions.

There is a European Data Protection Board (EDPB) that oversees the data protection rules in the European Union in concert with national data protection watchdogs, and it is an independent body because it is composed of national data protection watchdogs.

An immediate comment from the organization could not be obtained.

A discussion of ChatGPT has been added to the agenda of the body following a request from Spain to discuss the matter at the beginning of this week.
