USMNT Lineup vs England: Haji Wright Starts For The First Time In A World Cup

(CTN News) – USMNT: For the US men’s national team’s second 2022 FIFA World Cup match against Group B leaders England (2 p.m. ET | FOX, Telemundo), head coach Gregg Berhalter has made one starting XI change, swapping Haji Wright for Josh Sargent.

The team have been given the green light to start with midfielder Weston Mc Kennie, center back Tim Ream, and right back Sergio Dest despite yellow-card suspension concerns from last Monday’s 1-1 draw with Wales.

There are 10 of 11 holdovers from that match who are still playing.

There is no mention of Gio Reyna or Brenden Aaronson on Burkhalter’s bench for this match.

As a result of a series of injuries during Concacaf qualifying, Reyna was an unused sub against the Welsh, a decision that has been met with the greatest of controversy among the fans.

This is Wright’s fifth cap and his second start for the USMNT, as he is in excellent form for Turkish side Antalyaspor. In the 74th minute of the game, he came on to replace Norwich City’s Sargent, who had been substituted against Wales.

This will be the third meeting between the USMNT and England at the World Cup – and so far, the USMNT has been undefeated. Brazil 1950 won with an emphatic 1-0 victory, whereas South Africa 2010 had a close 1-1 draw.

It is likely that the USMNT will need a win over Iran on the final day of Group B (Nov. 29) to qualify for the knockout stages no matter what transpires at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar.

There is only a chance for the top two teams from each group to advance to the Round of 16 – and only the USMNT and England are in the Round of 16 following their 6-2 routs of Iran and Iran, respectively.

In an earlier match on Friday, Iran secured a 2-0 victory over Wales by scoring two late goals to take advantage of the presence of LAFC forward Gareth Bale.
