Tottenham Supporters' Trust Disappointed by Anfield Chants

Tottenham Supporters: The Anfield 1-1 draw from a few days ago caused crazy reactions from fans. While some were focusing on using footwagers.com to place bets before the match started, fans who went to Anfield to watch the match had other things in mind. Various chants about joblessness and poverty have been thrown toward Liverpool fans.

Of course, this caused a reaction from the Tottenham Supporters’ Trust, who were disappointed that poverty and joblessness are used for such things.

The Chants

During Saturday’s Anfield 1-1 draw, various chants could be heard. A few Spurs fans were heard chanting “sign on” in an attempt to wind up the supporters of the other party.

Tottenham’s Supporters’ Trust reacted to the chant, saying that this “is now what we are about”. Then, they also said, “We’re Tottenham Hotspur. We’re better than that.”

The “sign on” chant is sung to the You’ll Never Walk Alone tune, and it’s a known chant directed at Everton and Liverpool fans. This has been the case since the 1980s, after the economic recession of Merseyside while the prime minister position was occupied by Margaret Thatcher.

“Poverty and joblessness are not fair game for banter.” said the Tottenham’s Supporters Trust. “There is a cost of living crisis throughout England, including in London. Our club represents an area and community with the fastest growing rate of unemployment in the country.”

“Singing about the opposition has long been a feature of English football and we are reluctant to tell fans how they should support the team. Nevertheless, we were disappointed to hear the ‘sign on’ chant at Saturday’s away match at Anfield. We are rightly proud of our away support and we want it to be noticed for positive reasons. For most of the game at Anfield, our fans gave superb backing to great team performance.”

Then, they went on to say how this is now what they are about, and have clearly shown that they are against the chants. “Spurs fans have provided financial backing to Marine FC on Merseyside, and regularly contribute to food banks and community initiatives in London. This is what we are about. The ‘Sign on’ chant is not what we are about.” they said.

The statement of the Tottenham Supporters’ Trust was appreciated by Spirit of Shankly, the supporters’ Union of Liverpool. They tweeted “Well said!” in response.

Spurs Internet Opinion

The opinion on the THST statement has been divided. Some consider that it is outdated, while others simply look at it as banter. It is, however, important to bear in mind that over decades, football has changed a lot. It is not the same as it used to be decades ago. As such, things like what happened at Anfield will keep being examined all the time.

Incidents like the one at Anfield are always bound to happen, especially considering some supporters are too passionate about their favorite teams and the games. However, more and more people are condemning such chants and hope that supporters of all teams will be respectful of others.
