Dissecting Tottenham Hotspur’s Performances Against Top Eight Sides

Sitting in fourth position and a respectable eight points adrift of league leaders Arsenal – on the surface – it appears as though Tottenham Hotspur have kickstarted their 2022/23 season well.

However, it’s once you take a more informed look at their record when you begin to realise their campaign has been rather poor.

Their results against top eight sides in the league table in particular makes for dreadful reading, with the Antonio Conte-managed outfit only managing one win across six games.

That has hurt their odds in the Premier League betting, with Tottenham now 66/1 to win it all.

With that in mind, read on as we dissect each of the top eight teams in the league table they have played thus far.

Chelsea vs Tottenham (2-2)

Spurs’ first match-up against a team who currently sits in the top eight was their Gameweek 2 clash with London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

After the Blues’ Kalidou Kalibaly opened the scoring with a beautiful volley off a corner, Tottenham hit back in the second half courtesy of a sweet strike from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from outside the box.

It appeared as though their fightback would go in vain however, with Chelsea’s Reece James breaking the deadlock in the 77th minute to give the home team a 2-1 lead.

Enter Harry Kane. Spurs’ talisman headed home an equaliser in the 96th minute to help his side steal a draw in what was one of the most thrilling contests to date this season.

Arsenal vs Tottenham (3-1)

A football season may be long and arduous at times, but if there’s a game that Tottenham players need no motivation to get up for – it’s the north London derby against Arsenal.

Once again away from home, Conte would have been hoping for at least a point. Instead, they were beaten handily by Gabriel Jesus and company.

The Gunners’ Thomas Partey scored the first goal of the contest in the 20th minute, before Kane levelled things up at the penalty spot.

From there it was one-way traffic, with the Mikel Arteta-managed side notching up two further goals in the second half to triumph 3-1.

Brighton vs Tottenham (0-1)

In what is their only win against a side currently in the top eight, Tottenham were stout in defence and effective in the counterattack at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.

Their discipline at the back and applied pressure at the front eventually paid dividends, with Kane heading home the only goal of the match in the 22nd minute.

Manchester United vs Tottenham (2-0)

In yet another dire performance, Spurs were dreadful in their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

You could mistake the match-up for a United training run, with the Red Devils breaking down their opponent’s defence with ease and continuously peppering Spurs’ goal from the opening whistle.

It was Fred’s and Bruno Fernandes’ goals in the 47th and 69th minute respectively which ultimately proved the difference on the score sheet.

The 2-0 score line flattered Tottenham, with their goalkeeper Hugo Lloris their best performer as he saved many of United’s chances on goal.

Tottenham vs Newcastle United (1-2)

While many of their games against the top teams had been away up until this point in the season, they finally had the opportunity to take on a top eight side at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It didn’t result in a win however, with the in-form Newcastle outfit shooting out of the blocks in the first half to put the game out of reach.

The Magpies’ Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron scored two goals before the main break, ensuring Spurs needed to play with intent in the second stanza.

That they did, and they managed to get themselves back into the contest courtesy of a 54th minute goal to guess who – Kane. It wasn’t enough however, as Newcastle held on to win 2-1.

Tottenham vs Liverpool (1-2)

In what is their most recent outing against a top eight outfit, Spurs would’ve fancied their chances against a down-on-their-luck Liverpool team.

The Reds have been a shell of the side we have been accustomed to in recent seasons, with Jurgen Klopp’s men managing just five wins in 13 appearances before their game in north London.

Their form didn’t deter the visitors however, as Liverpool came out firing from the outset. Mohamed Salah bagged a first-half brace, and just like that, Spurs were once again on the back foot.

Kane scored in the 70th minute to make things a little more exciting – however the home side couldn’t find a second and they fell to Liverpool 2-1 at home.
