RIO -Usain Bolt completed the first part of his ‘triple-triple’ masterplan, winning the 100m gold in a time of 9.81. Justin Gatlin claimed silver, with Canadian Andre de Grasse taking the bronze.

 

History was also made in the men’s 400m. While all eyes were on Kirani James and Lashawn Merritt in the middle lanes, South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk burst around the outside and pulled away from both of them, with a winning time of 43.03 – smashing Michael Johnson’s record by 0.15 seconds.

Something special for Sumgong

Jelagat Sumgong became the first Kenyan woman to win the Olympic marathon, securing her country’s first gold of Rio 2016. Sumgong completed the course in two hours, 24 minutes and 4 seconds, ahead of Kenyan-born Eunice Kirwa, who now runs for Bahrain. World champion Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia took bronze.

The final of the women’s triple jump was won by Colombian favourite Caterine Ibarguen. Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas took silver and Kazakhstan’s Olga Rypakova won bronze.

Murray secures back-to-back golds

Great Britain’s Andy Murray became the first tennis player to retain an Olympic title as he beat Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, while Martina Hingis and Venus Williams both settled for silver in their women’s and mixed doubles matches, with respective partners Timea Bacsinszky and Rajeev Ram.

British gold rush continues with a sprint cycling 1-2

Jason Kenny defeated Callum Skinner in an all-Britain final inside the velodrome to defend his individual sprint Olympic gold medal and win his second gold of Rio 2016. Kenny and Skinner combined with Philip Hindes to win the team sprint on Thursday night.

It’s a Rio Rose garden for Justin

Britain’s Justin Rose overcame a strong challenge from Swede Henrik Stenson to claim the first Olympic golf gold medal since 1904. The European pair duelled for more than five hours, and neither had more than a one-stroke advantage the entire round. Rose was left standing at the end, pumping his fists as fans waved the Union Flag around the 18th green.

“Oh my God. That felt better than anything I’ve ever won. It was the best tournament I’ve ever done. It felt like a cross between a golf tournament and a carnival. It was unique, incredible,” the Briton said.

Whitlock strikes gold twice, as Biles adds to her collection

Artistic gymnast Max Whitlock won his second Olympic gold medal of the day by narrowly beating Great Britain team-mate Louis Smith in the men’s pommel horse. Whitlock earlier gained Team GB’s first-ever Olympic gold in the sport in the men’s floor, where he was joined by two Brazilians, also winning their country’s first medals in the event.

Simone Biles claimed another gold, this time in the vault event, ahead of the balance beam final on Monday and the floor exercise final on Tuesday. She is already the first American artistic gymnast to win three golds at the same Olympic Games.

First wrestling gold goes to Cuba

The most traditional of Olympic sports saw its first winners today, with Cuba’s Ismael Borrero Molina beating Japan’s Shinobu Ota in the men’s Greco-Roman 59kg final to take gold, following up his victory in the same event in the 2015 world championships.
