Premier League: Five sickening injuries that will make you wince

The Premier League is one of the most competitive leagues in the world, and the games are always laden with drama. At the bet exchange, you can tap up some exciting odds for a wide range of markets to get you closer to the action.

Apart from the moments of flair, and individual brilliance, the Premier League has also provided its fair share of bone crunching challenges over the years, which has forced players to end their careers earlier than anticipated.

We will chronicle five of the most sickening injuries that have taken place on a Premier League pitch, so brace yourself.

1.Aaron Ramsey – 2010 Premier League

Arsenal has been cursed down the years when it comes to injuries, and there have been some accusatory fingers pointed in the direction of the club doctors. However, few could have foreseen what would happen when the Gunners faced Stoke in February 2010.

Ramsey was on the receiving end of a scything challenge from Ryan Shawcross, and unsurprisingly, the Stoke defender was sent off for his recklessness. But Ramsey cut an agonising picture on the pitch, as TV replays showed his leg was contorted. It was later announced by the club doctor that Ramsey had sustained a double fracture in his right leg, but thankfully the Welshman came back stronger when he returned to action.

2.Alfe-Inge Haaland – 2001 Premier League

There has been no love lost between Alfe-Inge Haaland, and Roy Keane. Their feud began in earnest in 1997 when Keane accused Haaland of feigning injury when the Norwegian was at Leeds.

However, Keane exacted revenge when Manchester United faced Manchester City in 2001 at Old Trafford. In what was a pre-meditated challenge, Keane hacked down Haaland with a sickening tackle above the knee. Haaland damaged his anterior cruciate ligament, and he wasn’t the same player when he returned.

3.Petr Cech – 2006 Premier League

This injury unfortunately sticks long in the memory. Cech and his Chelsea teammates were on the road as they made the trip to Madejski Stadium to take on Reading.

However, Cech’s day was cut brutally short, when after just 20 seconds, the Czech shot-stopper collided with Stephen Hunt. Instead of hurdling the challenge, Hunt clattered his knee into Cech’s head. Cech was left dazed, and the injury was calamitous. After that, Cech was forced to wear a protective helmet.

4.David Busst – 1996

This happened 25 years ago, but it is still one of the most horrific injuries witnessed in the Premier League. At the time, David Busst was plying his trade for Coventry, and he had managed to nail down a regular starting spot at that point.

But on a fateful night at Old Trafford, Denis Irwin, and Brian McClair sought to clear the danger from a corner, but instead, they collided into Buust, and he suffered extensive fractures to his knee.

Even the supposed tough man Peter Schmeichel couldn’t bear to watch as Busst received treatment on the pitch. It was even feared that Busst would have to have his knee amputated, and he quit the game at the age of 29.

5.Luc Nilis – 2000

Having joined Aston Villa with much fanfare, it was expected that Luc Nilis would have an immediate impact in the Premier League. But it wasn’t to be. In making just his third league appearance for Villa against Ipswich, Nilis was clattered by Richard Wright.

The Belgian’s right leg seemed to bend backward, and it was gruesome for all to see. After the match, Nilis went under the knife, but it was too little, too late, and he hung up his boot four months later. A sad end to what could have been a promising career.
