Nitto ATP Finals: Rafael Nadal Loses To Felix Auger-Aliassime In Turin
(CTN NEWS) – Nitto ATP Finals champion Rafael Nadal is out of the tournament after being knocked out of his group.
In Turin, he lost 6-3 6-4 to Felix Auger-Aliassime after losing to Taylor Fritz in the first round. With the 36-year-old’s exit, Carlos Alcaraz finished 2022 as the world’s number one.
For Casper Ruud to eliminate Rafael Nadal on Tuesday, he only needed to win one set against Fritz. The Dutchman, who had already beaten Auger-Aliassime, won 6-3 4-6 7-6 (8-6) in a tight match to move to the top of the Green Group.
Rafael Nadal said, “I don’t think I forgot how to play tennis and be mentally strong enough.”
“I must regain all these positive feelings, confidence, and strength of mind to reach the desired level. I am not sure if I will reach that level again. What I am certain of, however, is that I will die for it.”
Injuries prevented Alcaraz from competing in Turin, despite winning the US Open in September.
Since the US Open, Rafael Nadal has lost four consecutive matches.
Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram defended their US Open titles this year and defeated Lloyd Glasspool and his Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara in the men’s doubles 7-5 6-4.
Novak Djokovic will face Andrey Rublev in his second match of the Finals on Wednesday, while Stefanos Tsitsipas will face Daniil Medvedev.
