Japan vs Croatia - World Cup 2022 Recap

(CTN News) – Croatia qualified for the World Cup quarter-finals with a penalty shootout victory over Japan.

Croatia won the tournament’s last match 3-1 on penalties on Monday at the Al Janoub Stadium in Wakrah, south of Qatar’s capital, thanks to a penalty kick scored by Mario Pasalic.

Ivan Perisic of Croatia and Japan’s Daizen Maeda scored in 90 minutes to tie the game at 1-1. There was no goal in extra time.

Before the final whistle, Perisic and Croatia captain Luka Modric, both experienced penalty takers, were taken off.

Japanese goalkeeper,

Dominik Livakovic, Who will surely become a hero back home, saved  first two penalties, from Takumi Minamino and Kaoru Mitoma. The first two Croatian attempts found the net.

It was Takuma Asano’s third shot that scored Japan’s goal. Marko Livaja of Croatia hit the post with a casual attempt. Another poorly struck penalty by captain Maya Yoshida was also saved. Pasalic kicked the winning goal to end dream.

In the first half, Japan opted to sit back and let Croatia dominate possession, instead concentrating on lightning-quick counterattacks. Remember that this was a team that had beaten Germany and Spain in group play.

Just before the half-hour mark, Croatia had a great spell, with Modric looping in pinpoint crosses that his teammates couldn’t convert into anything more than sustained pressure.

A well-deserved goal was scored by Celtic’s Daizen Maeda in front of the 42,523-strong crowd in the 42nd minute, as efforts and efforts paid off.

The Croatian captain commanded the midfield as always, leading a solid and experienced line, but Croatia lacked attacking options to challenge Japan’s back four – and for most of the game, the team did not want to score.

An experimental, probing delivery from Croatia in the 54th minute was met by a golden header from Ivan Perisic, whose headed shot bent inside the post.

A new lease of life was breathed into the game with the move. Two minutes later, Japan’s Wataru Endo attempted a reply, but Livakovic had to tip his curling effort over the bar.

The shot by Perisic was deflected by Takehiro Tomiyasu after 15 minutes of normal time, sending it high and wide.

Despite Japan’s increased energy levels during the second period of extra time, a breakthrough still wasn’t achieved. At Croatia’s Lovro Majer had an excellent chance at the end of extra time, but he missed. were penalties to decide the game.

Despite Croatia’s lackluster performance, they will face the winner of tonight’s match between five-time champion Brazil and South Korea at Education City on Friday in the quarterfinals.
