How to Watch the Biggest Sporting Event FIFA World Cup This Year

That’s right, the FIFA World Cup is finally back and it’ll be on our screens very soon!

The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi might be playing in their final World Cups, so it’s definitely one that you don’t want to miss out on!

This year, the World Cup is being hosted in Qatar. With the rise of digital media and live streaming, millions of football fans all around the world will be keen to watch the World Cup from their devices.

However, if you’re trying to watch the FIFA World Cup online, you might run into some trouble with geo-blocking.

As frustrating as it might be, geo-blocking is an important part of our modern world. But, luckily there’s a way to get around it!

All you need is a handy cybersecurity tool that will allow you to change your device’s virtual location.

Why It’s Difficult to Watch the FIFA World Cup Online

It’s become more and more difficult to live stream sports from your devices in our modern world.

The main problem that internet users are facing is geo-blocking restrictions.

If you’re someone who frequently streams YouTube videos, live streams sporting events, or watches Netflix, you should be all too familiar with the disappointing error message: “the content you are trying to access is not available in your region”.

Geo-blocking might be annoying, but it exists for an important reason.

Media companies such as ESPN need to buy the rights to broadcast sporting events.

To secure broadcasting rights for a massive global event such as the FIFA World Cup, media companies need to pay millions of dollars.

Along with acquiring broadcasting rights, these media companies also need to follow some strict rules — one of which is that they must broadcast the content in their region or country.

This allows other media companies to buy broadcast rights for the event and prevents one large company from establishing a monopoly.

Streaming websites will determine your location by using your IP address. An IP address is a unique string of numbers that is used to identify your device on the internet.

One of the IP addresses’ main roles is to pinpoint your physical location and pass that information on to websites.

Websites will then decide whether your device is allowed to access the content or if geo-blocking should be implemented.

How to Use a VPN

All you need to bypass these digital walls is a handy cybersecurity tool known as a virtual private network.

It’s far more commonly known as a VPN. While this cybersecurity tool is mainly used for privacy and security, one of its features allows you to change your device’s virtual location.

Firstly, a VPN protects your device by encrypting your internet connection.

While your internet connection is encrypted, everything that you do on your device will be masked — even from your internet service provider and the government!

In other words, this is the ultimate tool for privacy and security on your device, which is especially important to have when you are traveling and using unsecured internet connections.

These unsecured connections are commonly found at public WiFi hotspots such as airports, hotels, and restaurants.

When it comes to finding some great FIFA World Cup streams though, you want to be able to change your device’s location to bypass geo-blocking restrictions.

Your VPN allows you to change your IP address by connecting to secure global servers in other countries or cities around the world.

When you’re connected to a VPN, your real IP address will be masked, and your device will adopt the IP address of the server that you are connected to — tricking the website into thinking that you are accessing it from the correct region.

For instance, if you find yourself in Thailand, but you need to be in the United States to access an ESPN sports stream, all you need to do is activate your VPN and connect to a server in the US.

You’ll notice that your browser will switch from Thai adverts to US adverts as your IP address will show websites that your location is in the United States.

When you try to access the stream again, you won’t run into any geo-blocking restrictions!

Is It Possible to Use a Free VPN to Stream the World Cup?

While you’re scouring the internet for a VPN to use, you’ll inevitably run into some free VPNs.

It’s incredibly tempting to use one of these free VPNs to save even more cash on streaming the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but it’s not recommended to do so.

Free VPNs come with several crucial drawbacks that will affect your streaming experience, and this is important to keep in mind. Overall, you’ll struggle to watch any matches using a free VPN, and here’s why:

  • Slower connection speeds – while using a free VPN you will have throttled connection speeds. This will lead to lag, delays, and a drop in image quality — not something you want in an action-packed match!
  • Fewer global servers – the whole point of using a VPN is changing your device’s virtual location to access new streams in different regions. Unfortunately, though, you’ll find that some of the best servers won’t be available if you’re using a free VPN and you’ll be limited to just a few countries around the world.
  • Daily data limits – We all want to catch the full 90-minute match when the World Cup games kick off. However, most free VPNs come with daily data limits of 500 MB. If you’re streaming, this limit will likely be reached in less than an hour — you’ll be lucky to make it to halftime!

Always make sure you install premium VPNs on your device, especially if you’re going to be streaming the World Cup this year.

Many premium VPN vendors even offer free trials, which is something you should certainly keep an eye out for.
