Five of the best Super Bowls

Best Super Bowls: As the festive period rapidly approaches, there are just a handful of games left to play of this newly extended 17-game NFL regular season — which will end on January 9th. The play-off picture certainly makes for interesting reading, with a good mix of post-season regulars and a few surprises.

But it’s starting to become clearer in the NFL betting UK which franchises truly have what it takes to go all the way and lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on February 13th.

So, with the playoffs on the horizon and anticipation quickly building for Super Bowl LVI, which will see the mammoth game return to LA for the first time since XXVII took place at the Rose Bowl in 1993, let’s take a look back at five of the best Super Bowls on record. Read on to find out more!

  1. Super Bowl XIII: Pittsburgh Steelers vs Dallas Cowboys – 35-31

Super Bowl XIII is a great place to start in our list of the best title games. Dallas Cowboys, the defending champions, went head-to-head with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Miami Orange Bowl. It was a repeat of Super Bowl X, making it the first time two sides had met in the final game for the second time, with the Steelers coming out on top again to win their third Super Bowl title.

Leading 21-17 going into the final quarter, the Steelers scored two touchdowns to extend their advantage to a comfortable 35-17. However, the Cowboys didn’t give up, scoring a touchdown of their own before recovering an onside kick and reaching the end zone again to make it 35-31. That was the end of the dramatic fourth quarter though as the Steelers gathered the onside kick this time and ran the clock down to seal the victory.

  1. Super Bowl XXV: New York Giants vs Buffalo Bills – 20-19

With the Buffalo Bills one of the best teams currently in the NFL — favourites to win Super LVI in fact — they would probably like to forget this era in the early 1990s when they lost four successive final games. Super Bowl XXV, the first of that run of losses, must have been the most painful though as they were narrowly beaten by the New York Giants.

The Bills trailed the Giants 17-12 going into the final quarter but scored an impressive touchdown in the first play of the quarter to give them a slender 19-17 lead. The Giants hit back, advancing their way down the field, and while the Bills managed to stop the drive, a field goal was enough to restore the New York franchise’s lead.

The drama continued though, as the Bills got to within field goal range with only eight seconds remaining, but Scott Norwood’s 47-yard attempt sailed agonisingly wide to gift the Giants their second Super Bowl title in Tampa Bay.

  1. Super Bowl XLII: New York Giants vs New England Patriots – 17-14

Get ready to read a lot about the New England Patriots in our top three. Starting things off is this Eli Manning vs Tom Brady cracker. The Patriots went 16-0 in the regular season and were heavily tipped to breeze their way to the title. However, the Giants put in a great defensive performance and barely gave Brady a second to breathe.

With only one minute left on the clock, and the Patriots leading 14-10, Manning escaped the grasps of the opposition’s defence and fired a long pass down the field to David Tyree, who caught the ball against his helmet just outside the Patriots’ 20-yard line. Just a few plays later and the Giants quarterback picked out Plaxico Burress in the end zone and the University of Phoenix Stadium erupted.

  1. Super Bowl XLIX: New England Patriots vs Seattle Seahawks – 28-24

The Patriots returned to the Arizona-based venue in 2015 for Super Bowl XLIX and recorded a dramatic narrow victory of their own — beating the Seattle Seahawks 28-24. Brady and co. were 10 points down heading into the fourth quarter and were staring down the barrel of another Super Bowl defeat at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

However, the Patriots scored 14 unanswered points to take a 28-24 lead and what happened in a final couple of minutes is truly unbelievable. A few big passes by Russell Wilson got the chains moving for the Seahawks and they were soon at first and goal.

A rush from Marshawn Lynch got them within a yard, but unbelievably, Wilson decided to do a passing play instead of another run. Bleeding the clock down, the QB’s pass was intercepted at the goal line by the Patriots, leaving Wilson to rue his costly decision.

  1. Super Bowl LI: New England Patriots vs Atlanta Falcons – 34-28

Perhaps the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, the Patriots trailed the Atlanta Falcons by a huge 28-3 in the third quarter at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. However, they amazingly came back to win 34-28 and secure a sixth Super Bowl title.

A touchdown with two minutes to go in the third quarter set up the beginning of the comeback, but there was still a long way to go heading into the final quarter. Brady was sacked twice in the red zone, meaning the Patriots had to settle for a field goal to make it 28-12.

A Matt Ryan fumble gave the Patriots the ball back just outside the Falcons 20 and they punished them by scoring a TD, followed by an extra two points. White scored his second touchdown of the match to make it 28-26 and another two-point conversion levelled the score.

With the game now in overtime, Brady tossed to White, who drove his way over the line to win the Patriots the Super Bowl!
