Final score: Portugal Beat Ghana In World Cup Opener As Ronaldo Makes History

(CTN News) – A five-goal thriller between Portugal and Ghana marked Cristiano Ronaldo’s fifth World Cup goal.

From the opening whistle, Portugal dominated possession, almost earning a tangible reward – Ronaldo was thwarted by Lawrence Ati-Zigi, before heading wide a few moments later.

Just past the half-hour mark, Ronaldo had put the ball in the Ghana net with a typically assured finish. However, the Portuguese captain was adjudged to have fouled Alexander Djiku, and the goal was ruled out.

After Portugal had tailed into the second half, Ronaldo stepped up from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Mohammed Salisu and smashed in his 118th international goal.

Ghana responded positively. The ball was deflected off Danilo Pereira by Kudus before falling perfectly for Andre Ayew to tap home from close range after he stung the palms of Diogo Costa.

This time, it was up to Portugal to find a way to win, and the team did so by scoring twice in three minutes. As the architect of both goals, Bruno Fernandes slipped passes through the Ghana defense to set up Joao Felix and Rafael Leao for assured finishes.

As Osman Bukari headed Ghana back into the game in the 89th minute – and then mocked Ronaldo with his celebration – Ghana’s hopes of a draw were revived right up until the end, when Inaki Williams cleverly caught Costa, only to slip at the crucial moment when he tried to nip in ahead of the goalie.

Ronaldo will surely be playing in his last World Cup, and the result means he is set to win one of the few trophies that have eluded him.
