The Russian football team remains in contention to qualify for the FIFA World Cup after FIFA backed away from immediately expelling them. A number of nations have announced they will not play Russia because of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, including England and Wales, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Sweden. Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched a military invasion of neighboring Ukraine.
World Cup 2022 playoffs: Russia to play matches under certain rules

The Russian flag and anthem cannot be associated with the team while competing in qualifiers, according to a report by AP. According to FIFA, the RFU team can only play on the neutral territory without spectators.

FIFA said in a statement, “FIFA will continue its dialogue with the IOC, UEFA, and other sports organizations to determine if any additional measures or sanctions, including exclusion from competitions, need to be applied in the near future should the situation not improve rapidly.

As per the report, FIFA had delayed implementing the ban on Russia competing under its name until after possible qualification for the World Cup.

Will Russia qualify for World Cup 2022 playoffs?

Russia is scheduled to face Poland in a World Cup qualification playoff semifinal on March 24 in Moscow. If they win, Russia would face either the Czech Republic or Sweden.

The winner of the playoff will face either Sweden or the Czech Republic on March 29 to determine who advances to the World Cup in Qatar from November 21 to December 18.

On Sunday, the Czech Republic joined Poland and Sweden in announcing that it would not play Russia. The English Football Association also announced that it would not play Russia to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people and to condemn the “atrocities” that are being committed by the government in Moscow.

Aside from teams refusing to play Russia, the Russian sporting community has also suffered since the conflict in Ukraine began a few days ago. The UEFA has moved the 2022 Champions League final out of Russia due to the conflict. Formula One has called off the Russian Grand Prix, which was scheduled for September.
