Campbell will be relieved of his responsibility as deputy vice captain for a period of 12 months

Campbell Brown’s role in an incident during an off-season trip to Thailand has cost him his leadership position at AFL club Gold Coast.

The Suns announced on Thursday night that they had taken the deputy vice-captaincy from Brown for the next 12 months.

Thai police arrested Brown and three team-mates after an altercation with another tourist during a full moon party on the island of Koh Phangan.

But the four players were released without charge.

The Suns decided to take no action against Maverick Weller, Jacob Gillbee and Joel Wilkinson.

“As a designated leader, the club feels Brown’s actions were below the standards expected of him by the club,” the Suns said in a statement.

“Campbell had the opportunity to avoid becoming involved in the verbal altercation and therefore the subsequent physical altercation that ensued.

“As a result Campbell will be relieved of his responsibility as deputy vice captain for a period of 12 months.”

But Gold Coast added that Brown would have the chance to rejoin the player leadership group in a year’s time.

“Campbell deserves the opportunity to regain his position as deputy vice captain and we will support him in doing so,” club chief executive Travis Auld said.

The Suns said Brown and Weller had an argument with an unnamed person as they were leaving a party on the island.

“The verbal dispute escalated into a physical altercation when an unknown third party intervened,” the club said.

“The altercation initially involved Maverick Weller and then Campbell Brown.

“Brown and Weller were questioned by Thai police about the incident, as were team-mates Jacob Gillbee and Joel Wilkinson, but no further action was taken.

“It’s important to note that Gillbee and Wilkinson were merely witnesses to the incident and not directly involved.”

The club added Weller had put himself at risk by becoming involved in the verbal argument, but said his involvement was “minimal”.

“The incident provided Maverick with a valuable lesson in relation to the additional responsibilities that come with being an AFL footballer,” the club said.

Auld said the Suns would review their procedures for players when they are on leave from the club.

“This incident has been a major wake up call for our playing group – we will use it to further educate our players,” he said.
