Thongchai proved his pedigree in elite company with a tied-13th at Turnberry two years ago, having headed into the final round four shots off the lead only for his putting to let him down in blustery conditions.
Thongchai, who holds the most number of wins on the Asian Tour with 13 titles, is now hoping to take his game to the next level at Royal St George’s next week.
“After 2009, I feel like my game is good enough to win and my main goal is to stay focused and patient all week,” said Thongchai, who also enjoyed Order of Merit successes in 2001, 2004 and 2009.
“This year it’ll all be about remaining confident and letting the positive things happen. I drew a lot from that experience and showed myself that I am good enough to compete against the world’s best in the toughest of conditions.”
The 41-year-old acknowledged that weather may well again play a part in deciding who takes this year’s Open but vowed to keep his focus at the world’s oldest major.
“I am well prepared for the tough, windy conditions. While hitting onto the green is always important, you need a variety of shots to cope with the conditions and that’s one thing that I’ve been focusing on in my preparations,” said the Thai golfer.
