RIO – Ginny Thrasher won the first gold medal of the Rio Olympic games early on Saturday for the United States in the women’s 10-meter rifle event. It was the only gold of the day for the Americans, who share the lead in medal count at five with China and Japan.

The Americans did bring home four silver medals: one in archery and three in swimming. Chase Calisz placed in the men’s 400 meter individual medley, finishing just .7 seconds behind gold medal winner Kosuke Hagino of Japan.

Maya DiRado placed second in the women’s 400 meter individual medley behind a world record performance from Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. The women’s 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay then closed the night with a silver medal finish behind a strong performance from its unexpected anchor Katie Ledecky.

The Australian women’s 4 x 100 meter freestyle relay team set a world record time as it cruised to an easy gold medal for the second year in a row behind anchor Cate Campbell. Indonesia won a silver medal in women’s weightlifting after winning just two medals total in London. Vietnam also took home its first gold medal ever with a win in the 10 meter air pistol.

Thailand’s Sopita Tanasan blew away the opposition to grab the first gold medal of the weightlifting competition competition
