Masters champion Charl Schwartzel is the latest big name to sign up for the $1-million Thailand Golf Championship, organisers said on Wednesday, joining Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke.

In-form Spaniard Sergio Garcia and England’s Simon Dyson were also confirmed for the season-ending Asian Tour event December 15-18, which organisers said will go ahead after the worst flooding in decades in Thailand.

World number three Lee Westwood of England, Japanese sensation Ryo Ishikawa and Thai legend Thongchai Jaidee will also compete at the inaugural showpiece at the Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok.

Schwartzel’s inclusion means that three of this season’s four Major winners — McIlroy won the US Open and fellow Northern Irishman Clarke took the British Open title — will be on show in the Thai capital.

Amata Springs was unaffected by the floods, said Suwat Liptapanlop, vice-president of the Thailand Olympic Committee.

“Confirmation that all the world-class professional golfers are still committed to the Thailand Golf Championship is a good sign and a reassuring vote of confidence for Thailand and the event,” said Suwat.
