Tragic Accident in Phuket Takes Drivers Life and Injures Chinese Tourists

PHUKET -Two Chinese tourists have been injured and one person killed when a speeding van crashed head-on with a sedan in heavy rain in Phuket’s Thalang district.

Police at Thalang police station in Phuket were alerted of the tragic accident around 1am.

The van was travelling from Patong beach to Phuket airport in a downpour, when thedriver lost control in a curve, swerved into the opposite lane, collided head-on with the oncoming sedan.

The driver of the sedan Mr. Ratchasak Chaithet, 26, was seriously injured and rushed to Thalang Hospital, but died shortly later. His mother, wife and 6-year-old son, were injured in the accident.

The impact of the crash was so intense that it threw one of the two Chinese tourists completely out of the van. Miss Shengnan Gu, sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Phuket International Hospital. The other Chinese tourist Mr. Zhongren Jiang, and driver of the van Mr. Sompan Meemuangnok were also hurt.

A police investigation showed the van was travelling at high speed when it lost control and hit Ratchasak, who was returning to Phuket after taking his mother to undergo chemotherapy in Hat Yai district of Songkhla.

Authorities investigating the crash scene say the van driver was travelling at a high speed during poor weather conditions and charges are pending further investigation.
