SONGKHLA – As Thailand’s political factions struggle to appoint a new Prime Minister after highly controversial elections, southern Islamic insurgents have once again started attacks on Thai security personnel.

On Sunday evening a policeman was killed and four others were injured when a bomb placed in a bunker sandbag at the security booth was detonated in Chana district of Songkhla province.

The impact killed Pol Sen Sgt Maj Kosol Kongsawat instantly and injured Pol Lt Nipol Kaeonu, Pol Sen Sgt Maj Chamnan Sukmee, Pol Sen Sgt Maj Siri Thongthep and a woman.

Police said the bomb weighed about 15 kilograms and was fortified with chopped steel rods before being placed in the sandbag.

National police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda said on Monday that the Islamic insurgents were escalating attacks at the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. He ordered police to intensify their security measures.
