Worldle

Worldle, Sweardle, or Byrdle: When you get frustrated with the smash hit puzzle, or just want to try something new, there are endless options to choose from – but which is the best? Worldle, Sweardle, or Byrdle?

It continues to be a contentious issue among Wordle players: has the New York Times ruined Wordle? The absurd number of double-letter days (SWILL, seriously? ); the frustration of solutions that are based on a single, ambiguous letter? What about “caulk”? Are things different noDo people simply no longer care about it?st? There have been a rapidly increasing number of copycats and humorous takes on Wordle since it gained worldwide attention, ranging from swearing (Sweardle) to choral music (Byrdle) to geography (Worldle). You can find a whole host of other word games you can play on your phone in the Android and Apple app stores, though, if you’re looking for something different. Some of these have quietly enjoyed fans for years – some offer five or ten minutes of puzzle fun every day, while others allow you to spend as much time as you like.

SpellTower

In SpellTower, players form words by connecting adjacent letter tiles in order to clear the play field. During the puzzle mode, the letters are continuously added until they reach the top of the screen, at which point the game ends. In addition to assessing your vocabulary and spatial planning skills, the game also allows you to view words as tactical objects as well as linguistic units.

Wurdweb

Basically, you are given a list of words, and you must place them on the board without running out of playable spaces. It may seem easy, but if you place too many words in one corner, you may get lost, so be sure to use the premium squares. In this game, players explore word placement strategies in a unique way, and success unlocks the more challenging “precise mode”, in which players must finish on a specific square. This is not an easy game!

Baba Is You

You can have as much fun playing logic games as you can play word games in this endearingly lo-fi puzzler. If you create the sentence ROCK IS MOVE, you can move boulders that won’t move; if a key is hidden down a maze, create the sentence KEY IS YOU and you can possess it and move it. Despite being outsmarted, you will feel like a genius when you succeed.

Letter Quest: Grimm’s Journey

Letter Quest is like a slightly violent version of Scrabble; you guide a cute grim reaper through dungeons full of monsters by creating impressive words from a panel of letter tiles. The fun comes from finding the right word or finding a long one; there is nothing quite as satisfying as defeating a werewolf with “silver”. A delightful combination of word puzzles and old-fashioned dungeon-delving adventures. People who played Bookworm Adventures, sadly now extinct, will find it particularly enjoyable.

Kitty Letter

In this gently bizarre, free game, you unscramble words from a hexagonal grid of letters to send little armies of exploding cats towards your opponent’s house. It’s quite frantic, rather than contemplative, and more fun against a friend (or a stranger) online, but there’s a single-player mode too, featuring surreal interactive comics.

Typeshift

There’s a word you’re supposed to guess, and you have to figure it out – but this gives you a wheel of different letters that you spin with your finger until something makes sense. Another mode requires you to figure out several words from crossword-style clues using what you’re given. Typeshift has a tactile quality similar to playing with a padlock combination made of letters.

Alphabear: Words Across Time

There’s nothing cuter and weirder than this in a newspaper puzzle app – there are little bears with square heads, and using the letter grid creates longer words to create more bears. It combines word-building with the human urge to collect things. After every round, the words you’ve spelled become absurd cartoons. There’s something funny and adorable about this game, and it’s appealing enough to get kids interested in spelling. This game is different from Worldle.
