Caribbean Stud Poker

Caribbean Stud Poker is one of the most popular card games that define the casino industry. Over the years, new variations of the most famous game emerged, with re-structured rules and strategies that are designed to spice things up.

Caribbean Stud Poker is probably one of the best-known poker variations that are played against the house.

Like many other poker variations, the origins of Caribbean Stud Poker are still unknown, although, a well-known poker books author David Sklansky claims that he invented it back in the early 1980s. In modern times you can play it online on popular websites.

The reason why Caribbean Stud Poker is so popular is that the game contains most elements of “proper poker” but it doesn’t require that much thinking or effort. The only drawback is that the Caribbean Stud Poker has a house edge of over 5% even with the best possible strategy. In relation to other poker variations, like the European Poker, this house edge is pretty bad.

With that said, the Caribbean Stud Poker can be a lot of fun to play, especially if you are playing with your friends where you’ll get a chance to win a big jackpot.

How to Play Caribbean Stud Poker

If you are already familiar with high poker variations like Omaha, Stud, Five Card Down, or the classic Hold’em, then the process of understanding the principles of Caribbean Stud Poker should be a piece of cake.

The card rank is almost identical to most poker variations ranging from high card as the lowest rank, to royal flush being the highest.

Like other table games, Caribbean Stud Poker is played against the house, and there can be more people playing at the same time.

With each hand, you’ll need to place the ante in the designated spot on the table. After that, the dealer will deal five cards to each player, face down.

They will also take five cards for themselves, but one of their cards will be turned face up for everyone to see. This allows you to check out what other players have, and make a decision.

You can either decide to:

Fold – This means giving up your ante

Play – You need to place a bet that’s two times the ante

Once all players have made a decision, the dealer will turn over another card, and they’ll proceed to play. After a while, all player’s cards are on their backs for everyone to see, and the dealer needs to compare their hand with the hand of each player on the table.

If your hand is higher than the dealer’s you’ll get paid 1 to 1 on your ante. If the dealer doesn’t qualify, you’ll get paid on the ante, but all player bets will be returned to participants without any profit.

The amount of money you win depends on how strong your hand is compared to the dealer’s hand. For example, you’ll get paid 2 to 1 having two pairs, straight pays 4 to 1, flushes pay 5 to 1, full boats pay 7 to 1, straight flushes pay 50 to 1 and a royal flush pays 100 to 1.

To qualify for these bets, two conditions must be met:

  • Your hand must beat the dealer’s hand
  • The dealer has a qualifying hand

Most casinos offer an additional twist to Caribbean Stud Poker which is the progressive jackpot that you can play independently. To qualify for the jackpot, you need to bet at least $1, and 70% of every dollar goes into funding the jackpot pool.

To win the jackpot, you need to get a royal flush. However, most casinos offer 10% of the jackpot prize to the player that gets a straight flush, which makes the game even more interesting.

Conclusion

Despite having a higher house edge, Caribbean Stud Poker is very fun to play, especially for beginners that prefer an entry version of poker. The Caribbean Stud Poker eliminates a large portion of bluffing just because most cards are placed face-up for everyone to see.

If you still haven’t tried Caribbean Stud Poker, head over to your favourite online casino and check it out. It will definitely spice up your everyday gambling experience.
