Highway Police Seize 320Kg of Crystal Meth in Northeastern Thailand

Police in northeastern Thailand have seized 320kg of crystal meth or ya ice worth about US$1 million. Following a vehicle chase with drug traffickers.The drug seizure happened in Nakhon Ratchasima on Thursday.

Pol Col Charoonkiat Pankaew, deputy commander of the Highway Police, said officers spotted a Bangkok-registered pickup truck and tried to wave it down. The driver of the vehicle sped through a checkpoint, sparking a chase.

Police found the vehicle a few kilometers down the road. The drug runners had driven the truck into roadside bushes and abandoned it. Highway Police found 320kg of crystal meth packed in large sacks hidden in the rear of the vehicle.

Pol Col Charoonkiat told the Bangkok Post they believe the drugs were picked up in Nong Khai province after arriving from a neighboring country. He suspect the drugs were also destined for a third country, possibly Malaysia.

In recent years, countries in the Mekong region have faced over-supply of methamphetamine from the Golden Triangle. Especially crystal meth and “Yaba” a methamphetamine pill.

Methamphetamine has become more accessible and available, despite efforts to disrupt supply and precursor chemicals. New strategies are needed to stop the production in the Golden Triangle.

Shipments of methamphetamine have moved from Thailand to Malaysia and then other parts of Asia.

Despite Thailand’s increased efforts to curb trafficking there has been no effect as prices have been decreasing. There is now an oversupply of the drug at low prices not just in the Mekong but beyond.

It is not unreasonable to expect that shipments of the drug will move beyond Australia, Korea and Japan.

One of the things that worry Thailand is the supply of precursor chemicals. This is very troubling data for us he said.

“We have seen the supply surge which indicates there is no shortage of the precursors available.”
