CHIANG MAI –  Thai police take Chinese and English language courses to improve their communication skills for serving foreign tourists ahead of the upcoming high tourist season.

Hang Dong Police Station in the northern province of Chiang Mai provides the language courses for over 100 police officers who take turn to learn Chinese and English in their off-duty time.

Each officer attends two-hour class after work to pick up Chinese and English conversational skills and essential phrases.

Many are polishing their English skill but for Chinese language they are absolute beginners.  All of them of different ranks from Police General to Police Corporal have enthusiastically studied foreign languages.

Some senior officers admitted they learn slowly but found it very helpful.

“There are many Chinese tourists and residents in Chiang Mai. We needed to help them … so they are confident in us and love Thai police,” said a police officer.

After the 20-hour of workshop, each has to pass an evaluation test to complete the courses.

Meanwhile, a Romance scammer gang allegedly led by a Senegalese man has been nabbed for deceiving Thai women in Chiang Mai city into transferring money worth at least Bt50 million.

Four women in Chiang Mai have filed police complaints of falling victim to the gang who used social media accounts with false identities of wealthy western men to develop romantic relationships.

Police followed traces and found Kanokarn Chankla, 25, leading three accomplices running the social media accounts and handling bank accounts.
