Xi Jinping To Biden: 'US-China Must Bear Responsibility For Peace'

The US President Joe Biden’s video call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 18 emphasized that conflict and confrontation are not in either country’s interest. According to Hua Chunying, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, President Xi Jinping said that the world is neither tranquil nor stable at the moment and that it is our responsibility to guide it towards peace.

Xi Jinping told his American counterpart, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, “the Ukraine crisis is not something we want to see. This event shows countries should not come to the point of meeting on the battlefield. Conflict and confrontation are not in anyone’s interest. Peace and security are what the international community should treasure the most.”

US-China relations amid Russia-Ukraine war

The call between Biden and Xi Jinping comes after the meeting between US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi on Monday. On March 14, Sullivan met with Chinese Communist Party Politburo Member Jiechi in Rome. Sullivan discussed US-China ties during the meeting as well as the Russian attack against Ukraine. China and the United States both stressed the importance of maintaining open lines of communication.

As the Russia-Ukraine war enters its 23rd day on Friday, it is also pertinent to note that the two leaders had their conversation on Friday. China’s response to Russia’s war in Ukraine has been criticized by US officials. Similarly, China has spoken out against a series of sanctions imposed on the Putin-led country on multiple occasions. Jen Psaki, White House Press Secretary, previously tweeted that Russia made ‘false claims’ regarding the Ukraine war, accusing China of endorsing the ‘propaganda’.

She wrote on Twitter, “Now that Russia has made these false claims, and China appears to have endorsed this propaganda, we should all be on the lookout for Russia using chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine, or creating a false flag operation using them. It’s a clear pattern.”
