In her Christmas Day message, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II encouraged people to celebrate Christmas with friends and family in spite of the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Queen Elizabeth delivered her address next to a framed photograph of her arm-in-arm with the late Prince Philip, who died in April at age 99. She said she understood how difficult it was to spend a holiday season without the familiar laugh of Prince Philip. She wore the same sapphire chrysanthemum brooch she wore in the photo – a sparkling statement pin she wore as a newlywed.

The queen said in a prerecorded message broadcast at the time when many British families were eating their traditional Christmas dinner that although Christmas is a time of joy and happiness for many, it can be hard for those who have lost loved ones. “I understand it more than ever this year”, the Queen said.

Her Majesty will celebrate this festive season for the first time since she said farewell to her husband after more than 70 years of marriage in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. As a result of Coronavirus restrictions in effect at the time, the queen sat by herself – a poignant reminder of how she would live her life going forward.

She noted that her family was a “source of much happiness” despite her own loss, and said she welcomed four great-grandchildren this year.

Although once again, COVID means that we cannot celebrate quite as we had hoped, we may still be able to enjoy the many happy traditions, such as singing carols, decorating the tree, giving and receiving presents, or watching a favourite film where we already know the ending,” she said.

“It’s no wonder families treasure their Christmas traditions so much.”

The highly transmissible variant of the omicron coronavirus has forced the 95-year-old Monarch to spend Christmas away from Sandringham, where she traditionally celebrates the holiday with her family.

The palace announced Monday that the queen will spend the holidays at Windsor Castle, west of London, where she has been during most of the pandemic.

Several family members will be with her, including Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Queen Elizabeth’s annual Christmas message to the British people and the Commonwealth concludes a busy and sometimes challenging year.

After spending weeks in the hospital, Philip died in April, just two months shy of his 100th birthday. Buckingham Palace announced this week her Majesty agreed to stage a memorial service in his honour in the spring.

Following a night in the hospital in October, and advice from her doctors telling her to rest, the monarch has cut down on travel and work. In recent months, she has been undertaking light duties, including virtual meetings with diplomats and weekly meetings with the prime minister.

This past summer, she attended the Group of Seven summit in Cornwall, and in November, she gave a recorded speech at the UN conference on climate change in Glasgow.

The Queen concluded her message by noting that Christmas is often regarded as a holiday for children. But, she said, that doesn’t tell the whole story.

Perhaps it’s more accurate to say that Christmas speaks to the child within each of us. The joy of simple things can sometimes escape adults when they are burdened by their worries. I have joy in Christmas this year, even when the one familiar laugh is missing.
