United Furniture Industries Fires 2,700 Workers Overnight Before Thanksgiving
(CTN News) – All 2,700 of United Furniture Industries’ employed workers were let go the next morning, with the company informing them of the decision through email or text message while they slept before what they believed to be a regular workday.

Just two days before Thanksgiving, the firm producing affordable couches and recliners for Simmons Upholstery sacked hundreds of workers from its North Carolina and California factories and truck drivers.
The company informed their employees in their messages: “At the instruction of the board of directors…
we regret to inform you that due to unforeseen business circumstances, the company has been forced to make the difficult decision to terminate the employment of all its employees, effective immediately, on Nov. 21.”
The company is based in Okolona, Mississippi. Still, some of its employees were temporarily protected from this mass firing because truck drivers making deliveries would continue to be paid through the end of the week.
However, they were still required to return the equipment, inventory, and delivery documents to their superiors immediately.
“save for over-the-road truckers who are on a delivery run. Your termination from the firm is anticipated to be permanent, and COBRA will not be offered for the immediate termination of any benefits.”

Why did United Furniture Industries fire all of its employees?
Although the firm had previously dismissed its chief executive officer, chief financial officer, and executive vice president of sales over the summer, it is unclear why it chose to terminate all of its workers’ contracts unilaterally.
