UN Condemns Myanmar Junta's Conviction of Aung San Suu Kyi

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachele has condemned the Myanmar junta over the conviction and sentencing of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison, demanding her immediate release.

Michelle Bachelet said in a statement that the conviction of Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint after a sham trial in secret proceedings before a military-controlled court was politically motivated.

It’s not just about their freedom being denied arbitrarily — it closes another door to political dialogue.”

Since February 1, when Myanmar’s generals deposed the democratically elected government and ended the country’s brief period of democracy, Suu Kyi, 76, has been detained in a military prison.

A series of charges have been brought against her since then, including violations of the official secrets act, corruption, and electoral fraud. If found guilty, she faces decades in prison.

Military rule illegitimate in Myanmar

She was sentenced to two years for inciting against the military and two years for breaking a Covid law related to natural disasters on Monday. A four-year sentence was also imposed on former president Win Myint on similar charges.

As Bachelet pointed out, Than Naing, the former planning minister of Kayin State, and Nan Khin Htwe Myint, the former chief minister of Kayin State, were sentenced to 90 and 75 years in jail on corruption charges, respectively, last month.

Efforts are being made to remove political opposition by the military by utilizing the courts, she said. In spite of these cases, however, the coup and the military rule remain illegitimate in Myanmar.

The United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights also condemned the “vicious, utterly reprehensible” attack reported Sunday in Yangon, where troops rammed a car into a peaceful demonstration and fired live ammunition into the crowd.

In response, Bachelet expressed concern that these developments could further escalate tensions and violence.

Sunday’s attack left 5 dead and at least three people wounded, according to eyewitnesses.

Junta controlled media report said 11 protesters were arrested for protesting “without asking permission” and one sustained serious injuries.
