The Third Major Earthquake To Strike Mexico Since 1985 Strikes On Sept. 19, This One Measuring 7.6; 1 Person is Killed

(CTN News) _ A 7.6 magnitude earthquake shook the west coast of Mexico on Monday, coincidentally on the same day as two previous major tremors.

A major damage report was not immediately available following the quake, which struck at 1:05 pm ET, the U.S. Geological Survey stated.

According to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a wall at a mall collapsed in the port city of Manzanillo, Colima.

Within about 200 miles of the quake epicenter, the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami was possible along parts of the Mexican coastline.

There was no tsunami threat for the West Coast, including California and Hawaii, according to Weather.com.

According to the USGS, the quake was centered 23 miles southeast of Aquila and 9.4 miles deep.

Besides some cracks in buildings in the town of Coalcoman, Michoacan’s Public Security department said there were no immediate reports of significant damage there.

Claudia Sheinbaum, the mayor of Mexico City, tweeted that no damage had been reported.

As in 1985 and 2017, the quake struck on the same day. An earthquake simulation held nationwide to mark previous quakes sounded alarms less than an hour before Monday’s quake.

It is a coincidence that this is the third earthquake to occur on September 19, according to U.S.

Seismologist Paul Earle. “There is no physical or statistical reason why earthquakes occur in Mexico during any given month.”

A magnitude 8.0 temblor near Mexico City in 1985 killed as many as 10,000 people.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Puebla and Morelos in 2017, killing about 370 people.
